"Love was one prolonged goodbye..."

Inspired by a dear friend in Kamloops who has helped me over some difficult hurdles, I will be taking time away from blogging to get through the rest of 2007. It is appropriate then that I sign-off in typical style with a panoply of some of my strongest passions. Only 10 minutes ago, I was allowed the privilege of hearing a rough demo version of Yazoo's classic '80s hit "Only You," which David Usher is rehearsing in Toronto as we speak. I am enormously moved to hear him singing this song, even if he's only practising it. To say his version is going to haunt me for eternity is putting it mildly. The lyrics tell the story I want to tell, the words I want to say. In fact, they shout it from the rooftops, so it cannot fail to make an impact. So, if I get hit by a bus tomorrow, I can think of no better way to leave things. Here, accompanied by the tranquillity of a weeping willow in Grasmere, and headlined by an Andersson/Ulvaeus line above, are the words to "Only You," a song which brings back happy memories for me, and obviously means something to my David:

Looking from a window above it's like a story of love
Can you hear me?
Came back only yesterday
We're moving father away
Want you near me.
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew - only you.

Sometimes when I think of your name
When it's only a game
And I need you
Listen to the words that you say
It's getting harder to stay when I see you.

This is gonna take a long time and I wonder
What's mine, can't take no more
Wonder if you'll understand
It's just the touch of your hand behind the closed door.

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew

Only you.
